About
A little about me:
I’m a freelance software architect and engineer. I have a long history of software development projects – over thirty years of experience in fact, ranging from IBM Mainframes to minicomputers, microcomputers and embedded software and firmware. I’ve written business applications in BASIC on early computers that only used floppy disks for data storage all the way up to mass market software that’s probably on your computer right now.
Web Development
For the last few years I’ve spent a lot of time and effort doing web development. Mostly because it’s a lot of fun. Also the fact that since applications can be created on the web, it essentially removing the need for software distribution, which makes web development very appealing to me. Not only can customers get immediate access to the application, but it removes the cost of duplicating and distributing packaged software. It also completely removes the need for customers to purchase upgrades to their software, since the latest available version is always what’s on the web.
Cloud Computing
I’m also a big proponent of the idea of cloud computing — that is, using the Internet as a data storage medium instead of your home computer. This means that your software and data is available from anywhere and you’re no longer tied to your computer at home in order to get at your email, documents and company data. Ultimately, the only application you should need on your computer is a web browser…everything else will eventually be available on the web.
WordPress
In writing web applications, I’ve found a great appreciation for open source applications that can help web site owners build their own web sites. Chief among these applications is WordPress. I’ve found this to be one of the easiest web applications for non-technical people to use. WordPress also gives software engineers like myself the ability to write plug-ins, which means that WordPress’s features can be extended to do almost anything.
As a result of my new found appreciation for WordPress, I’ve decided to start building WordPress plug-ins to help entrepreneurs and small business owners. The goal is to allow anyone to set up a WordPress web site with the features and tools they need, but with very little effort. And remove the need to hire expensive software developers or web site managers and pay for a custom web site.
